Top Tier Clubs Bite Dust as President Federation Cup Reaches Round 16

The round of 32 stage of the President Federation Cup claimed a good number of top tier casualties after 7 Nigeria Premier Football League NPFL teams exited the championship.

First to bite the dust on Wednesday are title holders Bendel Insurance whose 0-2 loss to 2nd tier side Wikki Tourists means this year’s competition will have a new name as champions.

Six other NPFL sides that kissed the competition goodbye include Gombe United, Lobi Stars, Plateau United, Niger Tornadoes, Bayelsa United and Doma United.

El Kanemi walked over Gombe, bagging a 3-0 win in the process, Lobi fell to Shooting Stars 0-2, while Plateau slumped 3-4 on penalties to Sunshine Stars after 1-1 in normal time.

Elsewhere in more all NPFL duels, Rivers United beat Tornadoes 1-0, Bayelsa succumbed to Katsina United 0-1 just as Kano Pillars sent home, Doma, 1-0.

There were wins for favourites Enyimba International, Ikorodu City, Inter Lagos, Abia Warriors, Kwara United among others.

Exciting fixtures are expected in the round of 16 stage where Inter and Ikorodu will lock horns.in a potentially explosive Lagos derby.

Sparks could also fly between neighbours Katsina and Pillars while Enyimba face a tricky test against lower tier side Sokoto United.
