Nigeria Customs rounded off their participation in the African Women Volleyball Club Championship in Egypt with a 3-0 victory over Association Sportif of Algeria today.
The Nigerian ladies dominated proceedings on all fronts to run away with the emphatic win (23-25/13-25/17-25.)
With the victory, Customs finished the tournament 11th overall while the Algerian side settled for 12th place.
Customs won one game and lost two in the group stage, before slumping to Kenya Commercial Bank in the round of 16 which dropped them into the classification category.
One loss yesterday and today’s classification win over the Algerian side, ensured the Nigerian team ended 11th in the tournament’s overall standings.
The championship ends on 5 May 2024 in Cairo, Egypt.

Nigeria Customs Service started their campaign in the 37th edition of the Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship on a losing note.
Customs slumped to a 0 to 3 sets loss to Kenya Pipeline Volleyball Club in a game played today in Cairo Egypt.
The Nigerian ladies will hope to bounce back from the opening group C loss tomorrow when they face Saint Dennis Olympique of La Reunion.
Custom’s last group game is against Cameroonian side Mayo Kane Evolution this Sunday.
The championship field has been divided into 4 groups with top two teams qualifying for the next stage. -
Nigeria Customs will play 5 time champions Inter Clube of Angola in one of tomorrow’s quarter final games of the Africa Women’s Basketball League AWBL in Cairo Egypt.
To progress, Customs finished with 2 wins and 2 losses in group A and will have to be at their best against the Angolan powerhouses who ended their group B campaign in 2nd position.
Reflecting on their performances so far in the competition Customs’ coach Abdul Rahman Mohammed thinks it’s a learning curve for his team.
“I have told people, Nigerians out there that are basketball lovers not to expect that we will come here and perform miracles and win the tournament. No, it’s not gonna be like that. We are just gonna compete. A team that beat us are better than us and they will beat us. It’s not because we didn’t leave everything out there,” Mohammed maintained.
Weighing in on his squad’s lack of experience in the competition, the former Nigeria senior national team D’Tigers’ guard said, “It’s more than twenty something years since we’ve been here and I’ve told a lot of people that we are coming here as underdogs. If we are able to win some games, we would think we have achieved a lot.
“We are gonna compete, we are not gonna sit back say ok we are just making an appearance and then everybody can beat us. We are gonna compete and hope that the result is just gonna come when we compete.”
In their last group game yesterday, Customs relied on captain Nkem Akaraiwe and Tomi Taiwo’s combined 44 point effort to overcome winless Congolese side CNSS, 66-57.
Akaraiwe produced another double double performance of 20 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks and 27 efficiency rating while Taiwo led the floor with 24 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 17 efficiency rating.
For the Border Girls as Customs are known to go past Inter in tomorrow’s quarter final clash, they will require more than the combination of NKem and Taiwo as a complete effort from the team would be needed.
Tomorrow’s action tips off with a classification game between CNSS and ASPAC of Benin Republic which is followed by the first quarter final fixture between University of Douala and Rwanda Energy Group.
Elsewhere Kenya Port Authority KPA will face Equity Bank, defending champions and hosts Alexandria Sporting square up to Overdose Up Station while Customs vs Inter Clube rounds off the day’s knockout proceedings at 6:30PM.
Semi finals of this year’s AWBL will come up on Monday while the final is scheduled for Tuesday 19 December. -
Nigeria Customs basketball will be locked in one of final Group A games of 2023 Africa Women’s Basketball League AWBL today against Democratic Republic of Congo’s CNSS.
The matchup puts an icing on the Nigerian team’s 3rd place finishing into the quarter finals despite dropping two games back-to-back against Kenya Port Authority (73-53) and defending champion Alexandria Sporting Club of Egypt (96-57).
The trio of Nkem Akaraiwe, Olaoluwatomi Taiwo and Maranne Rene Johnson combined for 41 of Customs’ total points in the Sporting game yesterday 14 December at the City Arena, Alexandria, Egypt.
Customs’ opening day win, 57-46, over Universite de Douala of Cameroon on Monday 11 December makes a good calculation for the Coach Abdulrahman Mohammed and his players after closest challengers Universite mustered a slim margin of win over winless CNSS yesterday.
So victory over CNSS today will all but confirm a 3rd place finish in Pool A for Customs plus a quarter final appearance at AWBL.
In other games billed for the last day of the preliminary rounds in Group B, Equity Bank of Kenya will slug it out against OverDose Up-Station of Cameroon at 11:30am, while InterClube of Angola will do battle against ASPAC of Benin Republic.
Group B matchups will see CNSS file out against Nigeria Customs at 5:30pm just as defending champions and 1st place Alexandria Sporting Club will take on second place Kenya Port Authority at 8:30pm.
