All eyes will be on World record holder over women’s 100m Hurdles Tobi Amusan as the National Athletics Trials enter day 2 from 3pm today at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City, Edo State.
The final of the event is expected to go in the way of Amusan after she schooled the field in yesterday’s semifinal
Elsewhere in the women’s high jump final, national record holder Temitope Adeshina is firm favourite for gold.
In yesterday’s opener, one of Nigeria’s hottest ladies over 100m this year, Favour Ofili, won her maiden National title in that event with a new personal best of 11.06 seconds
She brushed aside African Games silver medalist, Olayinka Olajide who finished in 11.37 seconds while Justina Eyakpobeyan, who recently won the 100m in the Confederation of African Athletics CAA Region 2 championship in Accra, Ghana and the Commonwealth Youth Games silver medal winner came in third in a time of 11.47 seconds.
Ofili has now qualified to represent Nigeria in the 100m and 200m events and becomes the second Nigerian woman after Tima Godbless to make the both sprint Olympic contests.
In the men’s 100m, Kanyinsola Ajayi also took his first title.
He put behind a fairly strong cast of runners in a time of 10.14 seconds.
Alaba Akintola came second in 10.16 seconds while immediate past champion, Usheoritse Itsekiri rrok bronze in a time od 10.22 seconds.
Ajayi’s time is not good enough for the Olympics as he needs to run 10.00 seconds to land in the fashion capital, Paris.
In the men’s Shot Put, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi successfully defended his title for the 4th successive time with a throw of 21.37m.
The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa commended Chukwuebuka Enekwechi significant achievement, describing him as Nigeria’s dependable Athlete.
The trials which end tomorrow 18 June are a selection ground for Team Nigeria to the African Senior athletics championships in Cameroon this week and the Paris Olympic Games.

Edo State will host the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) 2024 General Congress and the National League for South South zone.
NRFF President Dr. Ademola Are made the announcement during a recent visit to Edo where he engaged with various stakeholders at all levels, reaffirming the Federation’s commitment to the growth of the sports in the state.
Teams from Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Edo will compete for the zonal title and a ticket to the national Super Six finals.
In the South West, 5 Clubs from Lagos and 1 from Ogun State will compete for the Cup which demonstrates the NRFF’s strategic approach to developing rugby across Nigeria.
The regional league is part of a broader competition held across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones—South West, South South, South East, North Central, North East, and North West – with winners from each region advancing to the national finals.
Fixtures and plans for other regions will be announced in the coming days as preparations for the 2024 Nigeria Rugby Football Federation League gathers momentum. -
Edo Queens lead the Nigeria Women Football League NWFL Super Six Playoff standings after notching the only victory in yesterday’s tournament opener.
They hammered Confluence Queens 5-1 to stay atop the pile with 3 points and plus 4 goals difference while Confluence occupy bottom spot with a minus 4 goals difference.
After sharing the spoils with a 1-1 draw on the opening day Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels respectively occupy 1st and 2nd in the group with identical statistics.
Heartland Queens and Nasarawa Amazons are respectively placed 4th and 5th based on alphabetical order after both teams produced a goalless draw.
Meanwhile Rivers Angels have received some financial motivation following their 1-1 draw against Bayelsa Queens in the NWFL Super Six Playoff.
Rivers State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Barrister Chris Green provided the uplifting moment when he donated a cash gift of N2m to the ladies.
The gesture is aimed at spurring the team to achieve success in their subsequent games.
The Port Harcourt-based side came from a goal down to snatch a draw against the hosts at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa yesterday.
Angels take on Edo Queens in their next game tomorrow with Bayelsa vs Nasarawa Amazons kicking off the day’s proceedings while Confluence Queens up against Heartland Queens concludes matchday 2 action.

The Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG), in collaboration with the Union of Africa Gymnastics (UAG), have started training Nigerian Coaches and athletes.
The Train-the-Trainer course at the Samuel Ogbemudia, Stadium in Benin City Edo state accomodates gymnastic coaches and athletes from different National Federations.
Edo tops the list of gainers after presenting 15 coaches and athletes for the excercise.
In his remark, the head coach of Edo Gymnastics Association and national Coach, Oni Erhunmwunsee said he is proud to be a part of the working system and the success story of Edo sports commission.
“The international training programme being organized by the Federation of International Gymnastics is happening at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium today because we have world class gymnasium. If our government did not put the facility on ground, this programme would not have been brought here.
“We are grateful to our Governor. If we were to attend this programme outside the country, it would have cost us much or we wouldn’t have attended at all but now we are taking advantage of it because it is happening in our house. That is why we have fifteen coaches and our athletes in attendance and we will all benefit from it.”
