The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to splash the sum of $247,000 (about N351.9 million on winning athletes at the just concluded All African Games in Ghana.
The figures are according to the Government’s approved reward scheme for athletes at games of such nature.
Each of the athletes that won gold medal would receive the sum of $3,000; silver medalist will get $2,000 each while the bronze medalists will each pocket $1,000 winning bonuses.
Team Nigeria finished second in the final medals table behind Egypt with 47 gold, 33 silver and 40 bronze medals.
The breakdown shows that gold medals will fetch the athletes $141,000, silver medalists will receive $66,000 while the bronze medalists will get $40,000.
52 countries competed for honours in 29 sports, with Nigeria involved in 25 sports.

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has praised the outstanding performances of the country’s athletes in the just concluded 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.
According to a statement released in Lagos by the Public Relations Officer for the Committee, Tony Nezianya, the NOC was extremely pleased and greatly impressed with each and every member of Team Nigeria for their impressive performance at the Games.
The statement quoted the NOC President, Engr. Habu Gumel as saying that the team’s overall second place finish— which consisted of 121 medals, including 47 gold, 34 silver, and 40 bronze—was the result of their commitment and diligence.
The NOC boss said the team had demonstrated unwavering dedication, resilience, and the true spirit of sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The 2024 Games took place from 8 to 23 March 2024. -

On the eve of the closing ceremony alone, Ghana clinched eight gold medals, winning the ultimate prize in women’s hockey, 200m men’s athletics event, high jump, men’s football event and four boxing gold medals.
All in one night.
Ghana also made history by becoming the first country to win gold in both men’s and women’s football events at the Games.
The closing ceremony of the Games saw star performances from music superstars such as Stonebwoy, Stanley Enow, Wiyaala, Innoss’B, amongst others.

The Black Princesses of Ghana won gold in women’s football after defeating Nigeria’s falconets 2-1 in an extraordinary fight back after extra time.
The victory in Cape Coast on Thursday meant Ghana dethroned Nigeria to become the champions of the African Games.
In the men’s game, Ghana defeated a strong-willed Uganda 1-0 on Friday to claim gold medal.

Nigeria capitalized on boxing and athletics to win 10 gold medals yesterday in the 13th African Games which end today in Accra, Ghana.
The boxers won 8 gold on the last day of the event with all registered 11 pugilists medaling in various weight classes.
Elsewhere, the quartet of Esther Elo Joseph, Patience Okon-George, Brittany Ogunmokun & Omolara Ogunmakinju stormed to GOLD by clocking a time of 3 minutes 27.29secs to win the women’s 4 by 400 meters relay final.
Completing the gold medal haul yesterday, Nnamdi Prosper Chinecherem became the first Nigerian man to win the ultimate prize in the men’s Javelin at the African Games since 1991 by throwing a distance of 82.80 meters.
In the men’s 4x400m final, the quartet of Emmanuel Ojeli, Samson Nathaniel, Adeyemi Sikiru and Chidi Okezie finished 3rd in a time of 3:01.84, the fastest time by a Nigerian team since 2004.
There was silver for Nigeria’s Olayinka Olajide in the women’s 200m where she clocked a Personal Best (PB) of 23.18secs (-2.6) to finish 2nd in the final.
In the men’s category, Consider Ekanem settled for bronze after clocking 20.80secs in the men’s 200m while Oyesade Olatoye added a shot-put silver in the women’s category by throwing a distance of 16.61m to place second.
On the courts, Nigeria’s U-23 women’s team in 3×3 basketball failed to defend their crown after slumping 11-21 to Mali in the final to settle for silver.
The country’s men’s handball team, Golden Arrows, defeated their counterparts from Benin Republic 38-20 to win bronze – Nigeria’s first medal in the event in 21 years.The battle for women’s hockey gold medal was also decided yesterday with Nigeria losing to their bitter rivals Ghana 3-4 via penalty shootout to settle for silver.
As the Games draw to a close later today, Team Nigeria occupy 2nd spot in the overall standings with 43 gold, 33 silver and 41 bronze, totalling 121 medals. -

Nigeria has landed her first boxing gold medal at the African Games in Ghana after Ojo Nene Joy walked over her opponent.
